This is to let you know that our friend and colleague Helen Lang passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2017 from the effects of a cardiac arrest. Helen was a Fellow of MSA and winner of the MSA Service Award for her many years spent organizing the Distinguished Lecture Series. She was a valued member of the West Virginia University faculty of Geology for 32 years, from 1984-2016, retiring recently as Emeritus Associate Professor. Helen Marie Lang was born December 2, 1946, in Denver, where she grew up. She earned her B.A. in chemistry from Willamette University in Oregon in 1969. After working as a chemist in a biomedical lab at the University of Washington (UW), she earned her B.S. in geology at UW in 1977. She then earned her Ph.D. in geology from the University of Oregon in 1983 before joining WVU. Helen’s research area was in metamorphic petrology with a focus on metapelites. Her cheerful disposition will be sorely missed by her many students, colleagues and friends.
