Dear Colleagues,

Please bring this opportunity to the attention of graduate students with interests in high-pressure mineral physics, volcanology, seismology, biostratigraphy and physical oceanography. Thank you.
__________________________________________________________
Four research assistantships are available for the International Joint Graduate Program in Earth and Environmental Sciences (GP-EES) of Tohoku University. The positions are open starting with both April and October 2018.
The successful applicants will spend at least 6 months during the doctoral work at our partner universities outside Japan and have an opportunity to be awarded the Jointly-supervised Doctoral degree from Tohoku University.
These positions are to conduct the following projects. For further questions about the projects, please contact the professors shown below.
1.	Physical volcanology and volcano seismology (Takeshi Nishimura, <nishi at zisin.gp.tohoku.ac.jp>)
2.	Formation and evolution of the core of the Earth and Planets (Eiji Ohtani, <ohtani at m.tohoku.ac.jp>)
3.	Hydrogen circulation in the deep Earth: high pressure hydrous minerals in the lower mantle and hydrogen in the Earth’s core (Eiji Ohtani, <ohtani at m.tohoku.ac.jp>)
4.	Litho-, bio-, and chemostratigraphic study on Jurassic to Cretaceous carbonate succession. (Yasufumi Iryu, <iryu at m.tohoku.ac.jp>)
5.	Observational physical oceanography on ocean ventilation, ocean's role in climate and biogeochemical impact (Toshio Suga, <suga at pol.gp.tohoku.ac.jp>)
6.	Experimental petrology/volcanology on eruption dynamics (Michihiko Nakamura, <michihiko.nakamura.e8 at tohoku.ac.jp>)
For these positions, a master degree in Earth and planetary sciences and related fields such as solid-state physics and fluid dynamics is required. Good oral and written skills in English language are mandatory.
Applications should consist of a curriculum vitae, motivation letter including the project to be engaged in and prior experience in the related areas, two short reference letters (1-2 pages) with the evaluators’ contact information. The application should be addressed as a single pdf-file to Shinobu Okuyama <shinobu.okuyama.b7 at tohoku.ac.jp>.
Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until positions are filled, but not later than November 30th, 2017 for the positions starting from April 2018, and than May 15th, 2018 for the positions starting from October 2018.

[Note]
1. Successful applicants need to take the official entrance examination to the Department of Earth Science or Department of Geophysics, Graduate School of Science, Tohoku University subsequently. The details will be informed to the applicant for GP-EES after the results announcement.
2. If you are interested in IGPAS (International Graduate Program for Advanced Science-> http://www.sci.tohoku.ac.jp/english/igpas/) of which application is starting soon, this can be another pathway to the fellowship positions starting from October 2018.
(For the details, contact IGPAS Admissions Office <direct at mail.sci.tohoku.ac.jp>.)
