SPOILT FOR CHOICE AT IMA2018!

Do you specialise in Mineralogy/Crystallography?
Would you like to meet, discuss the latest
developments and network with like-minded colleagues?
IMA2018 will provide all of these opportunities
and more! You will be spoilt for choice with the
sessions currently confirmed within the program
and outlined below are those targeted to your field of expertise.

PLENARY SPEAKERS

Professor Emil Makovicky, Denmark

Uranium mineralogy: new minerals, structure
complexity, thermochemistry and applications 80 years into the atomic age
Professor Peter Burns, United States will be
convening a session focussed on current studies
of new uranium minerals, the structural
complexity across the entire family of uranium
minerals, measurements of thermodynamic
parameters, and application of these studies.

Functional silicates and aluminosilicates: clays, zeolites and other minerals
Professor Ian Mackinnon, Australia will be
convening a session focussed on the modification,
functionalisation and reactivity of silicate and
aluminosilicate minerals that provide value-added
properties for a wide range of economic and environmental uses.

The ever-growing mineral diversity in the Earth
and the Solar System: new minerals, including
nano- and biominerals, and related nomenclature/classification issues
Professor Marco Pasero, Italy, Professor Frédéric
Hatert, and Dr Stuart Mills will be exploring new
methods as well as refined existing methods that
open the way to detailed studies of minerals,
including those that occur only as micro or even nanoparticles.

Mineral evolution and mineral ecology: the
changes in species diversity and complexity in space and time
Professor Dr. Sergey V. Krivovichev, Russia,
Edward S. Grew, and Robert M. Hazen will be
convening a session devoted to recent advances in
understanding evolution, diversity and complexity
of minerals and their distribution in space and time.

Mineralogical crystallography
Dr Mark Welch, United Kingdom, Fernando Colombo,
and Pete Leverett will be convening a general
session under the theme of mineralogical
crystallography for the discussion of topics
related to the crystal structure of mineral and related inorganic phases.

Modular aspects of mineral structures
Professor Dr Massimo Nespolo, France, Sergey
Krivovichev, Russia, and Isabella Pignatelli will
be exploring mineral structures built by modules
(blocks, rods and layers) and the
structure-building principle which allows fine
tuning of both structure and chemical composition.

Stimulating perovskites
Professor Brendan Kennedy, Australia will be
discussing recent advances in understanding the
significance structural distortions in
perovskites that occur as a consequence of
tilting and distortion of the BX6 octahedra.

Unseen but integral to the Earth’s interior: How
minerals determine properties and processes
Dr Catherine McCammon, Germany, Paola Cormodi,
Toru Inoue, Eiji Ohtani, and Jeremy Wykes will be
discussing all aspects of high-pressure
mineralogy, both experimental and computational,
that shed new light on our understanding of what lies beneath our feet.

Water in minerals and its effect on physical properties
Associate Professor Simon Clark, Australia and
Andrew Berry will be exploring the effect of
water on the physical properties of mantle
minerals, mechanisms for incorporating water in
nominally anhydrous minerals and methods for
determining the amount and type of water in a mineral.
